Adkins was born to a young single mother in several working-class neighborhoods of London. Adkins enjoyed listening to contemporary pop music while she was young and was learning to play the clarinet and the guitar. It wasn't until she was in her teens when she was introduced to Etta James, a rhythm-and-blues singerand other musicians in the late 20th century when she began to think about a career in the field of music. While she was being trained in a secondary school of performing arts funded by the government, a friend started posting songs Adkins had written on Myspace. Her work was quickly discovered by record companies and signed a contract with XL Recordings in 2006.
